(5 Mar 17) Many thanks to RAI Radio 3 in Italy for featuring Irish Piano Concertos on their 'Primo Movimento' show [listen here] and to the Journal of Music in Ireland for this detailed album review [full review here]:

"...an interpretation that is as assured as it is distinctive... The cleanness and precision of McHale’s playing comes across in the concerto’s finale... it is here that the tight synergy between conductor and pianist really comes across..."

(24 Jan 17) Joshua Kosman in the San Francisco Chronicle has reviewed Irish Piano Concertos:

"...performed with zest and sensitivity by pianist Michael McHale with the RTÉ National Symphony under Courtney Lewis... Field is best known for his intimate, dreamy Nocturnes... and one of them shows up here, in McHale’s lush arrangement for piano and orchestra, to serve as the concerto’s slow movement in emulation of Field’s own performance practice. The two movements of the concerto itself are delightful — buoyant, tuneful and neatly constructed. Hammond’s concerto, written in 2014 for McHale, is like a dense, post-Romantic fever dream, full of weighty explosions and capped by a wonderfully energetic finale. McHale makes a potent case for all of it" [read full review]

(17 Dec 16) The McGill/McHale Trio's inaugural concert tour has been well received, with sold-out performances, including the Philapdelphia concert, reviewed by David Patrick Stearns in The Inquirer:

"The other discovery was pianist Michael McHale. Why haven't we heard of this guy before? His playing was brimming with rhythmic vitality and a symphonic sense of scope, though always within the boundaries of good chamber-music manners. The Poulenc sonatas used color, pedal, and phrasing in ways that externalized the music's expression while respecting the lean sonority favored by the generation of French pianists for whom the composer wrote. The best news is that McHale and both McGills will enter the recording studio in the coming weeks, so we haven't heard the last of this threesome." [full review here]

(28 Nov 16) Two more positive reviews for "Irish Piano Concertos" from MusicWeb International and Classical Notes:

"The playing by the soloist and orchestra is superb, the sound excellent and the presentation of the disc is ideal. It deserves to be widely played."

(19 Oct 16) "Irish Piano Concertos" has been favourably reviewed by Classic FM (who will broadcast a track from the album on Sunday 23rd October) and the Irish Examiner:

"…[McHale's] own orchestral arrangement of [Field's] C minor Nocturne… works as a dreamy interlude between two sparkling allegro movements… [In] Philip Hammond's Piano Concerto… McHale gives a wonderfully vivid account of this exciting work and the RTÉ NSO do justice to the lush orchestration with hints of Ravel and Stravinsky…"

"…In the Prokofieff, this interpretation especially preserves the music's clarity - how can I have heard the sonata dozens of times over more than 20 years and just be discovering details in the piano part? This is one of the most penetrating and imaginative accounts I have heard, ranking at the top of a crowded field… McHale has done a surpassingly fine job with very demanding music. "…His touch can be ethereal, as in Debussy, or extremely forceful, as in Mussorgsky's Pictures… and his mechanism is practically without blemish even in the hardest pieces… I liked his well-contrasted Schubert, and I truly enjoyed his two pieces from Debussy's Estampes, Soirée in Granada and Gardens under the Rain, fluent and mercurial… As to his Mussorgsky, it was dramatic and intense, and I didn't miss the orchestra in The Great Gate of Kiev as I often do, so big (but unforced) was his tone…" [full review]

The emphasis was not simply on the surface brilliance of the pianist but on the underlying strength of the responsive interplay between orchestra and soloist. (12 May 12) Irish Times critic Michael Dungan on the 2012 Music in Drumcliffe festival:

"…Another young player championing music outside the standard repertoire – all of it Irish – was Belfast pianist Michael McHale. On either side of probably John Field’s best-known nocturne (No 4 in A) he gave a jaunty account of The Beardless Boy – from Philip Hammond’s 2011 Miniatures and Modulations – and then something really out there: Roslyn Castle, by William Vincent Wallace. Did it belong here? Maybe, maybe not. Did it provide colour, contrast, fun and pleasure? Oh yes.
In all, McHale had a great festival, both here and in large-scale works, such as the Elgar Piano Quintet with the Vogler [Quartet], and the Rachmaninov Cello Sonata, in which he sensitively partnered the similarly young Irish cellist Brian O’Kane…" [full review]
